City & Islington Sixth Form College

Campaigns at City and Islington Sixth Form have so far won commitment to an environmental sustainability charter and reducing landfill waste by ensuring recycling bins are available in every classroom.

NewVIc (Newham Sixth Form College)

Years in project: 2017/18, 2018/19

NewVIc students have been campaigning for a community garden at their college to improve the green space for students and teachers and increase the biodiversity of their campus. Students successfully built an alliance with local community organisation, Plaistow South Big Local, negotiated for £2500 to be put towards the garden and secured dedicated space on campus.

Hackney College

Years in project: 2018/19

Hackney are new to the project this year and we’re looking forward to develop their existing work on social action already taking place with their students.

Richmond Upon Thames College

Years in project: 2017/18, 2018/19

Richmond upon Thames College students have been tackling the issue of plastic waste. In March 2018 their Principal signed a ‘Plastic Free RuTC’ charter, making a public commitment to reduce the amount of plastic used in the college.

Nottingham College

Years in project: 2017/18, 2018/19

There have been multiple campaigns at Nottingham college, addressing two important issues, plastic reduction in canteens as well as access to green spaces.

Derby College

Years in project: 2017/18, 2018/19

Derby students have been campaigning for clearer air in their area, conducting research using clean air test tubes to demonstrate the current levels of pollution to raise awareness of this issue and negotiate with local decision makers. They have also been campaigning for a green space which has been granted and will be launched in September 2018.

West Nottinghamshire College

Years in project: 2017/18, 2018/19

The efforts of the students at West Nottinghamshire College have been addressing access to green spaces, and they have been successful in launching ‘the patch’ alongside a college carnival to engage students in new facilities and sustainability more generally.

Coleg y Cymoedd

Years in project: 2017/18, 2018/19

Coleg y Cymoedd students have been campaigning on the reduction of single use plastics on their campus running a number of plastic free initiatives including reusable bottles being given away at student ambassadors events. 2 students met the Wales Environment Minister to ask her to make sure the Welsh Government does more on plastics.

City of Bristol College

Years in project: 2017/18, 2018/19

Students at City of Bristol College have focussed on air pollution and wellbeing as key issues affecting their student body. The Bristol students have linked into city wide and national Clean Air campaigns to help raise the profile of the issue and make it relevant to college students.

Coleg Gwent

Years in project: 2017/18, 2018/19

The group at Coleg Gwent have been focussing on working with college managers to reduce the use of single use plastics, and have been campaigning for subsidised reusable cups and bottles and better signage for recycling across campus. They’ve been working with students with special educational needs to run a design competition for the campaign logo, and have even won a national award from NUS Cymru as the best campaign of the year.

Bridgend College

Years in project: 2017/18, 2018/19

Bridgend College students at the Pencoed and Bridgend Campus have been negotiating with senior managers at the college to create a plastic free campus in order to address the impact of single use plastics on marine life.
